During this past semester at SLCC, I had the opportunity to interview Wendy Heimbigner, a psychology professor here. My question to her was what she thinks are the three most important skills a student needs for college success?
The first skill Professor Heimbigner talked about was self-efficacy. She explained that “when you hit difficult assignments and the end of a semester it helps to have a sense of your likelihood of success. You have to believe that you can and will accomplish want you think you will.”
The second skill is resourcefulness. Professor Heimbigner says that “not all answers are going to be found in books and lectures. You have to know when it’s time to look elsewhere and have the skills to know how to.”
The third skill that Professor Heimbigner talked about was having a strong work ethic. She says that “you’ll probably spend more time on college work than any other you ever do. There’s no sense of going home and leaving work at work. You have to know that although it’s hard, you will accomplish what you set your mind to.”
These three skills I discovered with Professor Heimbigner are skills I agree are key to being a successful student. One point I found especially poignant was resourcefulness. In attempting to research and complete assignments, I found that “thinking outside the box” have helped me become a successful student. I will utilize these three skills as I continue in my endeavors to be a successful student.
