There are three examples that I feel have helped me become a master student from this class. I think this class has taught me a lot from school skills to just being a better person in certain aspects.
The first thing I have gained from this class is planning. I mean I have always kept a daily planner and wrote important things in it, but in this class it taught me more. I learned I need to plan out my homework and to make time in my schedule to complete it. I realize that school is my number one priority and I need to plan out my schedule wisely so I can fit everything in it and get my things done.
Secondly, I think the ability to take tests successfully is a very important quality to have. Especially in college you need to know how to take a test effectively. Honestly, this class helped me realize this and helped me get over the fear of test taking. I mean I know you’re always going to be nervous, it is human nature, but I think if you prepare, ask questions and actually study you will be better off.
Lastly, I have gained the ability to public speak, well…kind of. I’m still not one hundred percent comfortable, but I’m always going to be nervous and hate going in front of an audience. College essentials helped me with gaining the experience and confidence in this area. I realize that I’m not professional or anything, but I can tell I’m a little less nervous than I was before. Getting the opportunity from this class has helped me and will definitely help me in my future classes.
These are the three examples of my journey to becoming a master student. I think the skills and knowledge I have gained from this class will help me tremendously in the future. This class taught me a lot if important habits, but these three are the ones I chose and that stand out to me the most!

From the Life of a Real Student
I have recently monitored everything I do and how long I spend doing these things in my life. After monitoring myself for one week, I have discovered that I have a lot of free time on my hands. I spend most of this free time socializing and hanging out with friends. Though friends are very important to me, I believe that I can use some of this time on my productive things. There is no excuse why I wouldn’t be able to set a goal of straight A’s and accomplish it. Tracking my use of time has opened my eyes in a way. Hopefully, now I can make better use of my time.

Dear Freshman
I to was once a new freshman and know exactly how you feel right now. I was very excited to further my education and a bit overwhelmed at the same time. Whether you are coming straight out of high school or have decided to go back to school after being away for awhile, you have made a good decision in choosing Salt Lake Community College to start your college education. I have found three ways that will hopefully help you make this transition much easier.
First, you should get yourself motivated and stay motivated. Find out what you wish to accomplish while you are here at SLCC. Set a long term goal and constantly remind yourself of this goal.
Second, get yourself organized. I would advice you to get yourself a planner. You will be able to keep track of up and coming tests and assignments.
Finally, I would suggest that you get to know your professors. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help. The professors here at SLCC are more than happy to sit down with you one on one. You more than likely won’t find that at a University.
I hope that this information will help you in getting started with your higher education. I wish you the best and good luck.

Who I look up to...
There are several people in this world that I look up to but one individual stands out to me the most. She is amazingly giving and I emulate her so much, I wish I could be more like her, who I’m talking about is Oprah!
Oprah was born on January 29, 1954 in a rural, poor Mississippi area to an unwed teenage mother. She was raped at the age of nine and at age fourteen she gave birth to her son that died at infancy. When Oprah was nineteen and fresh out of high school she landed her first job as a local news anchor. She eventually was transferred to a daytime talk arena. She eventually made her own name for herself and founded a company names HARPO. She is one of the most successful black women ever.
One reason why I look up to Oprah so much is I think she has an amazingly good look on life and she has such a big heart. I respect her so much for everything she does for other people. I love how she is so kind, yet she had such a tough childhood life and she doesn’t let that get her down. I think a lot of times when people come from a rough family or have a rough childhood they like to blame their problems on that and instead she just is optimistic and has such a great outlook on life.
Oprah has done so many things in her lifetime to help others. She has recently done the television show Oprah’s Big Give. In that show she has so many people and they have a challenge to help change someone’s life for the better, by giving them opportunities that they would have never had before. Oprah’s motto is “give to someone each day and your life will be more fulfilling”. I think that is kind of like “paying it forward”; for instance, if you do something for someone else than something good will get done to you. I think we should all live by that motto and people would be a lot happier.
There are several people in this world that I look up to, but Oprah is the one individual that stands out to me most. For me in my life I try to be like that every day. I realize I don’t have the money like Oprah to help all of these people, but I think even just random acts of kindness are helping out others as well. I always try to help out others when I can and I think it’s important that people strive to be like that. I think if everyone just got over themselves and actually would make the effort towards others and go out of their way to help them this world would be a better place!

The Importance of Exercise for College Students
As college students we are so busy studying that we sometimes forget to take care of other important aspects of ourselves. As busy as we are exercising our minds, we must also find the time to exercise our bodies. There are three amazing benefits to physical exercise, such as improving your mood, increasing brainpower and having a better complexion.
The first benefit is that it improves your mood while reducing stress. Research shows that regular exercise reduces symptoms of moderate depression and enhances psychological fitness. Endorphins are hormones in the brain associated with a happy, positive feeling. Low levels of endorphins are associated with depression. During exercise endorphins are released that help to ease symptoms of depression. Exercise also boosts the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is thought to play a key role in keeping your mood calm. There are several factors that lend to new students possibly having bouts of depressing feelings such as, being away from home for the first time. Exercise can help ease these depressing feelings.
The second benefit of exercise is increased brainpower. I know as college students, we can all benefit from this. Exercise boosts blood flow to the brain, increasing levels of oxygen and nutrients it receives. The better shape you are in, the faster you fire brain waves that are responsible for quick thinking. So, for example if math is a problem for you, more exercise can help solve it.
The third benefit of exercise is a better complexion. With a college students busy social calendar, we all want to look our best. Exercise boosts circulation and the delivery of nutrients to your skin, helping to detoxify the body by removing toxins. As exercise boosts oxygen to the skin, it also increases the natural production of collagen. Your skin color is also improved after exercise because of increased blood flow.
We can get carried away with classes and studying in college, but we must remember to exercise. With the three amazing benefits of improved mood, increased brainpower and a better complexion, we really can’t find an excuse not to.
• 73 percent of college-aged women feel stressed

Faculty Interview...
During this past semester at SLCC, I had the opportunity to interview Wendy Heimbigner, a psychology professor here. My question to her was what she thinks are the three most important skills a student needs for college success?
The first skill Professor Heimbigner talked about was self-efficacy. She explained that “when you hit difficult assignments and the end of a semester it helps to have a sense of your likelihood of success. You have to believe that you can and will accomplish want you think you will.”
The second skill is resourcefulness. Professor Heimbigner says that “not all answers are going to be found in books and lectures. You have to know when it’s time to look elsewhere and have the skills to know how to.”
The third skill that Professor Heimbigner talked about was having a strong work ethic. She says that “you’ll probably spend more time on college work than any other you ever do. There’s no sense of going home and leaving work at work. You have to know that although it’s hard, you will accomplish what you set your mind to.”
These three skills I discovered with Professor Heimbigner are skills I agree are key to being a successful student. One point I found especially poignant was resourcefulness. In attempting to research and complete assignments, I found that “thinking outside the box” have helped me become a successful student. I will utilize these three skills as I continue in my endeavors to be a successful student.
